At the beginning of the 20th century, the Milanese firm Monzino & Figli, founded in 1750, was on the threshold of the most important era in its history: Under the direction of Antonio IV Monzino (1847–1929), the well-established plucked instrument workshop turned its attention to the construction of string instruments, hiring excellent violin makers who worked in the classical Italian tradition of Cremona. This change coincided with the renaming of the company to Monzino & Garlandini, reflecting the entry of Antonio's sister and her husband Carlo Garlandini into the management. The Monzino & Garlandini violin offered here provides an insight into this period of change andits playful elegance in the F-holes, the exceptional beauty of the one-piece field maple back, and the individual, opaque reddish-brown varnish, it is clear that it is the work of a mature, style-conscious violin maker. Thanks to its exceptionally good condition, which is not affected by a small repair on the lower edge that is of no aesthetic or musical significance, it also demonstrates the high musical quality of the string instruments with which Monzino & Garlandini made music history: a warm, mature and clear, well-rounded sound with brilliant highs.
