This remarkably well-preserved antique violin is a representative piece of Markneukirchen violin making from the late 18th century, and its mature and powerful sound perfectly fulfills sophisticated musical standards. The original hand-written label inside the body confirms that it was crafted in 1794 by Johann Christian Voigt, a highly successful master who hailed from a large Saxonian family of luthiers. The purfling very close to the margins has a broad inlay down the middle and bee-sting corners. The master created a striking signature flourish of his personal style and demonstrated his mature artisanry by subtly ornamenting the button with an additional intarsia tip. The truly lovely margins and delicate fluting suit this unconventional interpretation of the classic Vogtland model, which amongst other things is articulated in the expressive deeply carved scroll. Premium tone woods form the cornerstone of the violin’s high musical quality. The top was crafted of excellent finely-grained spruce, and Voigt selected gently flamed maple for the one-piece back; the wood’s grain is emphasized by a transparent golden-brown varnish. Other than the traces of use befitting a well-played instrument of advanced age, the violin has been kept in excellent condition and has not undergone any significant repairs. It was meticulously restored at our workshop and its sound was optimized. This master violin has a compellingly clear and precise sound with outstanding resonance that opens up rich musical options.
