This old master violin from Saxony is an interesting and expressive piece by Klingenthal luthier Johann Christoph Merz jun., whose biography ranks amongst the “desiderata” of scholars' research into the history of instruments. Although very little is known about his family relations and his background as a craftsman, this violin nevertheless articulates both his mature and distinguished personal style whilst also clearly reflecting its roots in the violin making tradition of Klingenthal. Whereas the specific form of the upper bout is a clear reference to the influential role model of the historic master David Hopf, Johann Christoph Merz' own hand, excellently trained and confident, can be seen in the slightly diagonal position of the sound holes. The exquisite flames of the maple used for the one-piece back illustrates the wide-ranging experience and well-stocked workshop of an established master. Kept in strikingly good condition ― a rare phenomenon ― the violin still features the original neck and its maker's label along with a few minimal carefully filled worm holes at the ribs, minor repairs and expressive traces of use from earlier owners. This fine historic violin represents Johann Christoph Merz' personal model with striking authenticity. After having been set up with great care by the professionals at our workshop for restoration, this violin with its exceptionally beautiful sound offers the musically rich exploration into an oeuvre that deserves to be better known. It will compel contemporary musicians with the bright yet pleasantly warm sound of its powerful voice.
