This well-aged historic violin was crafted by Johann Georg Schönfelder, the second Markneukirchen luthier of that name. He was born in 1750 and was a master luthier between 1769 and his death in 1824. Johann Georg Schönfelder made this violin in 1798, a mature piece at the zenith of his oeuvre. Recent research has discussed the question as to whether or not he was in fact related to his historic namesake, Johann Georg I. Schönfelder, who was one of the founders of the luthiers’ guild in Markneukirchen. There can be no doubt, however, that Johann Georg II. enjoyed great respect amongst his contemporaries; he was not only a widely respected mayor of Markneukirchen, he was also one of the best masters of his family. The unusually finely-grained spruce used to make the top is a visible sign of its craftsman quality, as is the flawless execution of the one-piece top and the extremely delicate fluting and purfling. The reddish-brown varnish shows multiple traces of use and a patina that is fitting for a historic instrument of such an advanced age. Residues of an inventory number by Rembert Wurlitzer is more than a milestone which documents the violin’s journey through time; it is also a strong statement about its perfect artisanry and historical relevance. Furthermore, the master violin can also be recommended because of its unique warm, mature, mellow sound which develops the full palette of tonal colours. We offer this rare premium instrument that is despite a few minor repairs at the ribs and on the top in excellent condition after having been completely set up by the experts at our workshop for restoration: it is now ready to play.
