Leon Bernardel, fine French master violin

This especially attractive French master violin is a fine master instrument that in essential parts was most likely made by Léon Bernardel, with an original label that is dated 1935 - indicating it was finished a few years after the master's death in 1931. In this second year of his latest period Leon Bernardel had his own workshop again, after a decade as artistic director of the leading company Couesnon. Success has proven that this decision was right, as Leon Bernardel could make good use of the reputation he had gained before, when he was a leading luthier of many great French orchestras and conservatories. Numerous premium quality violins left his workshop until his death in 1931, each one a reference for skillful craftsmanship and aesthetic sense, and that is the reason why Couesnon took over the name as a brand in 1933. This high artistic level of violin making is excellently expressed by the fine violin offered here, that was built after his typical elegant model with noticably styled archings. It matches the aesthetic criteria of Leon Bernardel perfectly and rightfully bears his renowned label. Shining golden-orange varnish with patination enhances the beauty of the flamed maple of which the two-piece back is crafted. The delicate scroll features sophisticated elegance. The appearance of the instrument is tastefully completed by the new rosewood setup. Our luthier thoroughly looked over the violin that is offered with minor restoration in very good condition. Its mature and warm, radiant sound unfolds with a sweet note, commemorating the music and the cultural life of the 1930's in France.
