Antique German violin from the workshop of the Markneukirchen luthier Ernst Reinhold Schmidt (1857-1928). The violin bears his name on the label. E. Reinhold Schmidt ranks amongst the key figures in Markneukirchen violin making. After undergoing training at some of the most well-regarded ateliers of his day (including that of August Riechers), he founded his own studio in 1874, E. R. Schmidt & Co., where he enjoyed major international successes. From 1920 on, his son, student and successor Reinhold Willy Schmidt ran the business with him, and it cannot be ruled out that he finished or perhaps even crafted this violin himself. With its excellent quality, the originally labeled violin can be seen as a worthy piece by both the father and the son, each masters of their craft in equal standing. The delicate spruce used for the top and the sycamore maple with deep flames used for the two-piece back are exceptionally lovely tone woods; they are further enhanced by a wonderfully delicate oil varnish in a luminous bright golden brownish-orange. This Ernst Reinhold Schmidt violin has been kept in good condition, and our luthier set it up and fitted it with a new bridge, soundpost and strings. The instrument sings with a bright, warm and radiant sound full of beautiful resonance and a mature character.
