Master violin of the Viennese school circa 1780, Thir family

With its exceptionally lovely silvery sound, this historic master instrument is especially well-suited for chamber music. It is an artistic instrument hailing from the old Viennese school of violin making and was crafted in approximately 1780, a time at which Mozart and Haydn were quite influential. There is a great deal of evidence suggesting that the violin was built in an atelier run by the family Thir, which means it came from one of the most significant schools of Viennese violinmaking. The high arch of the table and the Baroque style of the delicate sound holes confirm that is a typical instrument dating back to the era in which the capital city of the Danube monarchy became a major centre of European music; the classic form of the stringed quartet developed at this time as well. The exquisite craftsmanship in the purfling and the flawless and expressive carving on the scroll bear witness to the instrument's excellent artisanry. In keeping with its advanced age, this beautifully made violin features a heavily darkened red varnish with an interesting patina, and a few minor repairs were made that have no impact on the sound. After having been meticulously set up by the restorers in our atelier, we now offer this genuine Viennese violin in top condition and ready to play. It has a 1924 certificate from Dykes & Sons, London.
