Hans Lisper, Malung: Modern master violin in the Cremonese tradition - professional violin
A rare and personal testament to Swedish violin-making from the workshop of Hans C. Lisper (1946–2007), one of Dalarna’s most distinctive musicians and craftsmen. The label inside bears the Latinized inscription Joannes Petrini, Scuola Cremonesis, Malungensis and is dated 1990—an indication that Lisper completed his training at the renowned Cremona school and crafted his instruments according to the classical Italian tradition. Hans Lisper was far more than a craftsman: he was a Riksspelman—one of the highest honors for Swedish folk musicians—and received the Zornmärket in silver as early as the 1970s. This deep understanding of the instrument as a musical tool shaped his work as a luthier: he knew exactly what a violin must be capable of. Hans Lisper’s instruments were crafted according to the Stradivari model with precise dimensions and first-class wood, and this 1990 example clearly bears his signature: a custom-crafted, characterful body with a warm, luminous orange-red oil finish that evokes the great Cremonese tradition without imitating it. The finish possesses the lively depth typical of handcrafted work, which cannot be achieved by industrial means. Hans Lisper lived and worked in Malung, a small Swedish town in Dalarna that has cultivated its own tradition of violin making for generations. His instruments are rarely found on the market—as a violinist, composer, and luthier all in one, he did not produce mass-market goods, but rather unique pieces with a musical soul. This professional violin is a wonderful instrument for musicians and connoisseurs, combining Cremonese training, tradition, and Nordic craftsmanship in a single instrument.
