This outstandingly well-executed violin was crafted around 1920 in the studio of Franz Pfaff, the well-known instrument maker in the German city of Kaiserslautern. Its beautiful edges, carefully applied purfling and the expressively shaped scroll are all signs of a quality instrument whose history is confirmed by the company's original label. The luminous golden-brown varnish flatters the grain of the well-selected light-coloured wood, especially on the broad flames of the two-part back of sycamore maple.
