Value development of antique versus contemporary stringed instruments
While old stringed instruments can increase in value due to their rarity, historical significance, limited supply and interest from collectors, contemporary instruments are subject to the same normal market mechanisms as other high-quality handcrafted products.
The value of modern string instruments depends primarily on the quality of sound, the craftsmanship and the reputation of the luthier and not automatically on the age of the instrument. Only in exceptional cases, such as when a luthier achieves extraordinary international recognition, causing demand to exceed supply, or when he or she has ceased working, can such an increase in value may occur.
For most modern violins, violas and cellos, therefore, a stable price development at best, but often a slight downward adjustment, is realistic – but not a speculative increase in value. When purchasing high-quality string instruments, it is therefore advisable to take this aspect into account.
