Petite French viola, approx. 1850, Paul Cabasse

This rare and quite recommendable petite viola is a mid 19th century French piece of work that was handmade around 1850. IT bears the stamp of Paul Cabasse, 1852. The work and model are very typical for Mirecourt violin making tradition of the times, modelled after Stradivarius with medium ribs and rather flat archings. The varnish is of a golden-brown color over a yellow ground, well preserved with dark antiqueing to the top, some signs of playing and slight patination. With some old restoration inlcuding repair of wood worm traces that are well considered in the very low asking price, the rare petite French viola is offered in good immediate playing condition. The viola has been set up by our luthiers with new pegs, tailpiece and chinrest, a new bridge and soundpost and new Pirastro strings. This small French violas recommendable sound is warm, very large, matured, highly resonant, very well balanced over the strings and with good volume in the lower ranges. It deserves our warmest recommendation.
