Italian viola, circa 1890

This Italian viola is a rare instrument in a smaller size —a body length of 38.4 cm —which makes this Italian viola very pleasant to play. This Italian viola is a rare instrument in a smaller size —a body length of 38.4 cm —which makes this Italian viola very pleasant to play. As a typically Italian 19th-century instrument, it features an unusually high sound quality combined with interesting artisanal idiosyncrasies. Its creator, whose name is unfortunately unknown, allowed himself several artistic liberties. Like many a liutaio from the home town of Stradivari and Amati, he did not shy away from wood with wormholes, and he selected spectacular wide-grained spruce for the top. Its irregularities create a confident aesthetic contrast to the carefully chosen two-piece maple back with its powerful close flames. The deeply carved scroll shows the work of an experienced hand who could certainly afford to grant himself some restrained unconventionality. The bright, warm sound full of colour confirms that the instrument is a true Italian. We carefully set up the viola at our atelier and made ready to play, and it is free of cracks and in good condition. It is warmly recommended for musicians with a taste for something remarkable who will appreciate this instrument’s full-blooded character.
