Italian viola by Massimo Ardoli, Cremona 2024 – a perfectly successful, personal interpretation of the historic “Stauffer” viola by Girolamo Amati.
Massimo Ardoli (born 1962) is one of the established masters in the contemporary violin-making scene in Cremona, which he influences not least with his interpretations of historical models from the classical Italian violin-making tradition. This new viola reflects his personal exploration of the “Stauffer” Amati, a famous viola by Girolamo Amati from 1615. Ardoli proves himself to be a masterful artist who captures the essence of the historical model while forging his own path in the details, such as the two-piece back, which, unlike the “Stauffer,” which is made of congenially chosen, closely flamed maple. The delicate scroll, which would also suit a violin well, follows Amati's fine carving. With the elegant, highly transparent varnish, Ardoli demonstrates mature craftsmanship in the subject he teaches as a lecturer in varnishing at the Cremona School of Violin Making. The light feel of this Massimo Ardoli viola and its resonant, full-bodied sound with its mature and clear character recommend this instrument, which has been checked by our violin makers and is ready to play, for demanding literature of all eras in chamber music and solo performances.
