Italian viola by Massimo Ardoli, Cremona 2025 – a perfectly successful, personal interpretation of the historic “Gibson” Antonio Stradivari

Massimo Ardoli (born 1962) is one of the established masters among contemporary violin makers in Cremona, influencing them not least with his interpretations of historical models from the classical Italian violin-making tradition. This new viola reflects his personal engagement with the grand master of his hometown Cremona, a famous “Gibson” viola by Antonio Stradivari. Massimo Ardoli proves himself to be a confident artist who captures the essence of the historical model and goes his own way in the details, such as the one-piece back made of congenially chosen maple. The scroll follows Stradivari's fine carving. With the elegant, highly transparent varnish, Massimo Ardoli demonstrates his mature craftsmanship in the subject he teaches as a lecturer in varnishing at the Cremona School of Violin Making. The light feel of this rather large Massimo Ardoli viola in the hand and its resonant, full-bodied sound with its mature and clear character recommend this instrument, which has been checked by our violin makers and is ready to play, for demanding literature from all eras in the chamber music and soloist fields.
