Presumably Italian viola, attributed to Natale Novelli and with a certificate from Giuseppe Lucci attributing the instrument to Pedrazzini's nephew Natale Novelli. The viola in 42 cm soloist format is very comfortable to play thanks to its light weight. As a typical Italian instrument from the 1970s, it combines exceptionally good sound quality with interesting craftsmanship details, which the maker allowed himself in artistic freedom, and spectacularly grained, tightly flamed maple for the back. The somewhat careless varnish forms a confident aesthetic counterpoint to the exquisitely powerful, narrow flaming of the two-piece maple back. The deeply carved scroll also shows that an experienced hand was at work here, capable of controlled unconventionality. However, the instrument proves itself to be a true Italian viola with its bright, warm tone, rich in different colors. After thorough refurbishment in our specialist workshop, we recommend this crack-free and overall well-preserved, ready-to-play viola to musicians with an appreciation for something special who know how to value an instrument with a full-blooded character.
