Violin by Josef Rieger, 1927, Mittenwald

This excellent Josef Rieger violin was made in Mittenwald in 1927 and is a piece of rare quality in the price range, which is in surprisingly well preserved condition. There can be no doubt about the provenance of the instrument, that is revealed as a work in best Mittenwald craftsman tradition not only by the large scroll. The medium grained spruce of the top is a precious tonewood and typical for this region in southern Germany; presumably it is so-called "moon wood" that was harvested in the Karwendel mountains during specific lunar phases. The maple that was used for the two-piece back is of premium quality, too, and features a striking flaming. The softly arched model with pronounced flutings and edgework was built in best craftsmanship throughout and covered with a luminous golden-brown varnish that is full of character. The violin is substantially excellently preserved and was carefully worked over by our experienced luthiers, who made it ready to play. This good Josef Rieger Mittenwald violin features a mature, clear sound, rich in overtones and of very good power.
