Good Mittenwald viola, approx. 1890

With traces of time, this is a beautiful Mittenwald viola in good condition; it was built late in the 19th century keeping with traditional Mittenwald craftsmanship. The body of the antique viola measures 39.1 cm and was made of quality tonewoods. It has a flat arch. The beautiful grain of its medium grained spruce top and the mildly flamed, two-piece maple back have a luminous orange-brown varnish that has developed a good patina. Subtle details such as the precisely carved sound holes, the edgework and the accurate purfling were cleanly executed. The Mittenwald viola is with two uncritical table repairs that are considered in the price and some deep scratches and marks preserved in good, solid condition. This viola was professionally reworked in our atelier and its sound was refined to perfection. Its sound is full of character, warm, matured and bright, precise and equally balanced over all of the strings. It responds very well. This good Mittenwald viola deserves our special recommendation at the price!
